What a fado house is
A fado house is a room where the fado is the reason for being there, and dinner comes with it. It is not a restaurant with a show at dessert: it is the other way round.
Fado is sung solo, to Portuguese guitar and viola, and while it is sung the room is asked to keep quiet. That rule is what separates a fado house from a place with music in the background. Read what fado is and how to listen.
Four questions before you book
Is the fado sung through the whole dinner, or is it a short set between courses? Is the house open on the night you can go? Is the price of the show written separately from dinner, or is it unclear? And is the room small enough to hear the voice without a microphone?
All of them are answered on the houses’ own websites, in the opening hours and menus they publish. Be wary of anyone who will not tell you what time the singing starts or what it costs.
The four answers, at Fado no Porto
The fado sings from the start of dinner to the end. We are open every night, Sunday included, and we are the only fado house in Porto that does not close that day. The show is €15 per person, on top of dinner.
The room is an old stone vault, small on purpose, and the voice reaches the back without a microphone. Who sings each night is not announced: each night has its own voice. See what the fado night is like.
